MIHAELA URSULEASA
Biografie

A unique mixture of vivacious playing and lyrical talent makes Mihaela Ursuleasa one of the most remarkable pianists of her generation.

Born in Brasov in Romania in 1978, her career began when she was still a child. Following Claudio Abbado's advice, she stopped giving concerts in 1990 and concentrated on her musical and pianistic training. Mihaela Ursuleasa was rewarded for her discipline in 1995, when she won the prestigious Clara Haskil Competition. Carefully selected concerts and recitals followed while she continued with her training. After studying with Prof. Heinz Medjimorec in Vienna, she received her concert diploma cum laude in 1999.

Concert promoters across the world immediately showed interest and piano recitals followed at the major music venues, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Cologne Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Zurich Tonhalle and Carnegie Hall in New York.

Mihaela Ursuleasa has now established herself as an exceptionally talented pianist of exceptional emotional profundity. Paavo and Neeme Järvi, Marek Janowski, Andris Nelsons and Mark Albrecht are among the conductors with whom she regularly performs. She has made guest appearances with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, the Orchestre National de France, the Weimar Staatskapelle, the Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest, the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and - regularly - with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. Notable among the international music festivals at which she has appeared are the Lucerne Festival, the Salzburg Festival, the Styrian Summer Music Festival in Graz ("styriarte"), the Beethoven Festival in Warsaw, the Pablo Casals Festival in San Juan and the Marlboro Festival.

Mihaela Ursuleasa's expressiveness comes to the fore most particularly in piano recitals. The outstanding success of her recital tour of the USA in the spring of 2005 has made her extremely popular there, and she now reserves at least a part of each season for the United States and Canada. In the 2008/2009 season she is performing at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, with the Orchestre National de France, the Basel Sinfonietta and the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. She will be giving recitals in the large hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, in the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg and in the chamber music series in Luxembourg.

A passionate chamber musician, Mihaela Ursuleasa performs with the cellist Sol Gabetta and the violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and is also a respected lieder accompanist.
