Most people thought Blind Melon was all but over, no one expected a come-back. But they are back!
No other band ever sounded like Blind Melon: pure Alternative - Indie Rock, with a big potential to be successful without being a part of the mainstream mishmash. In 2006, Blind Melon surprised fans by announcing that they were reuniting, with new singer Travis Warren in tow. The group‘s fi rst new studio effort in nearly 13 years, “For My Friends” was released in the US only in April 2008 and was accompanied by an extensive and successful tour.
Warren’s voice sounds quite similar to Hoon’s, but it’s still different and personal. The band therefore manages to keep the previous Blind Melon-feeling and revive its spirit. “For My Friends” is a breath of musical fresh air within Blind Melon combineing funky, psychedelic, light soul elements and guitar solos to 13 rocksongs, showing their true nature.
The instrumentation on this album is nothing short of exquisite. Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn lay down more of the same complex rhythms and riffs that made the previous Blind Melon albums worth listening to over and again. Brad Smith’s bass and Glenn Graham’s drums once again work like a machine, finding a beat amid the busy sound of the music.
The album represents continuity but at the same time rebirth for both the band and the listeners, because Blind Melon still sound and look like Blind Melon.
„This record‘s a great rock ‚n‘ roll record. It‘s kind of like (1995‘s) “Soup” - the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you.“ (Travis Warren)
