Dresden's famous Kreuzchor, one of the most tradition-steeped boys' choirs in the
whole world, has again spent time at the recording microphones in order to embark on a new project: the "Kreuzchor Vespers".
The popular Saturday-evening choral vesper services at the Kreuzkirche on Altmarkt
have become a fixed date in many diaries, and not just among the citizens of Dresden.
They are part of the tradition of the musical life of Dresden and continue to make a
lively contribution to that scene. The present recording now marks the launch of a
spectacular CD series of the same name. Orientated towards the great ecclesiastical
festivals and high days, the mood and religious background of the church calendar are captured here in musical form. The selected works are all taken from the choir's
popular repertoire, with special emphasis on composers of Saxony.
The first Vespers edition, "Uns ist ein Kind geboren" (unto us a child is born) centres entirely around the Christmas season marking the joyful beginning of the church year. The chosen repertoire comprises virtuoso Christmastide music from seventeenthcentury "Old Saxony" by composers such as Heinrich Schütz, Andreas
Hammerschmidt, Michael Lohr and Christoph Demantius. The choice will appeal both
to repertoire connoisseurs and to anyone who enjoys the sound of treble voices.
The boys' choir of Dresden's Kreuzkirche is accompanied on appropriate instruments such as horns, trombones, violins, viols, flutes and organ, which provide the songs with a suitably festive framework. Additions to the Kreuzchor CD Vespers series are already in the pipeline: in spring 2010 there will be music for Whitsuntide to enjoy.
