A winter on Majorca
This theme will surely be of interest, even to many who are not really classics fans. It is above all a romantic album for all those who love Majorca. Hannelore Elsner reads from the famous Majorca novel and the biography of the French authoress George Sand. The stories are familiar to large numbers of people throughout the world because Frédéric Chopin plays an important role in them. He and Sand spent a turbulent and miserable winter on Majorca, but he did manage to write a whole series of important piano compositions there.
The narrative passages are framed by appropriate works selected from Chopin's oeuvre, performed by the Hamburg pianist Sebastian Knauer. As usual, his playing is characterized by a successful synthesis of sensitivity and clarity. Carried by the great German actress's attractive speaking voice and the pianist's intense performance, a unique synthesis of word and music emerges. This recording is now at last available as a mid-price release.
