Hamburg based earMUSIC, the international pop-rock label of the European entertainment group Edel, is proud to announce the release of “Still The Orchestra Plays” – the Greatest Hits of the terrific metal legend Savatage!
Over a career spanning eleven albums and countless live performances, Savatage has become a band of staggering power and limitless creativity. Formed by Jon and Criss Oliva in 1981, Savatage quickly established itself at the cutting edge of the hard rock world. Tempering savage metal attacks with haunting orchestrations and a distinctive melodic sense, the band has pushed the artistic envelope of their genre and, in the process, garnered a large world-wide following. The band's 1987 album, "Hall Of The Mountain King", signified a more progressive, multi-layered approach to the Savatage sound, and became one of the most critically lauded metal albums of the year. In 1990, "Gutter Ballet" was similarly cheered as "metal record of the year". Savatage continued to evolve with the releases of further symphonic rock concept albums like “Streets – A Rock Opera”, “Dead Winter Dead” and “The Wake Of Magellan”, that coincidentally formed the sound of their successful side project “Trans-Siberian Orchestra”, a mixture of rock opera and musical.
The unexpected death of guitarist Chriss Oliva at a car crash in 1993 shattered the band. Savatage continued on with various lineups, but his death effectively spelled the end for the band. At their 25th anniversary in 2007, Jon Oliva announced the definite breakup of Savatage.
Now, nine years after their last release “Poets & Madmen”, it is time to retract the unforgotten and still hailed sound of Savatage in form of the unique song compilation “Still The Orchestra Plays” – Greatest Hits Volume 1 & 2 that includes milestones like “Hall Of The Mountain King”, “Edge Of Thorns”, “Wake Of Magelian” and “Gutter Ballet”.
